The program of this is project is a private spa facility, equipped with 9 pool typologies, a cafe, and various spa rooms i.e. massage rooms, saunas and diving platforms. The concept behind the program circulation is based around the human body concept, to work, to cleanse and to nourish. These programs were met by pushing the user to do physical activity, to utilize the spa treatments and to engage in cafeteria style dining. Nolan and Kerianne completed a project based off of a design operation involving ruled surfaces. They were challenged to use this mathematical strategy of creating curves with straight lines. They used their projects as a precedent study and for the main source of inspiration. Massing, program, materiality and circulation were the main drives for utilization of pools for a program. The building forms took shape from a single drawing, and was then manipulated based on program. The system is a double shell, timbrel roof structure. It is built out of three materials, concrete (floor/pools), brick (roof), and glass (enclosure systems). Kolumba sized bricks are used along with quick setting mortar to achieve perfect catenary curves without the use of extra supports. Enclosure systems were designed to improve energy within the buildings based off of sun direction. A few precedent studies they looked at were Map 13, Peter Zumthor’s Spa, Copenhagen Habour Baths among others. The pools took shape based off an anthropological study of ways to improve health. The ground plane uses various types of material to push the user through the site, off from the beach and the street into the shaded regions of the new buildings.
